Question

Can you use applescript to access the volume setting "input level" in system preferences?

I want to make a script that adjusts the output volume of my mac based on the volume that the mic hears. I am not very good with applescript, but I do know how to control the volume. I was wondering if there was a command that retrieved the input level from the mic as it is show in the sound preferences in the system preferences window. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does the following script do what you are asking for?

get volume settings

set theInput to input volume of result

set volumeoutput volumetheInput

No. This sets the output volume setting equal to the input volume setting, not the input level. I am looking for access to the number that would be constantly changing based on the microphone reading.

I don't think you can do this, at least not with vanilla AppleScript

The 'input volume' setting that Pierre demonstrated is more of a gain level, not a dynamic, real-time sound meter.

This might be possible with a third-party audio recording application, but I'm not aware of one off-hand.

I know this happened a while ago but I have the same problem. If the mic detects sound over a certain level I want my script to say "Shhhh" to kind of prank my mom. If you found a way since you posted this, please tell me. Thanks
